When I first fell in love with Gatsby, I fell in love with
his personality. I knew I could not marry him because “rich girls can’t marry
poor boys”. I loved him but I had to leave him because he was not the upper
class man I needed to count on to support and take care of me. I later found
Tom. He was no Gatsby, but he was the wealthy man I could count on. He was the
status quo of the time period. Even though my love for Gatsby was stronger than
my love for Tom, I needed a man I could count on to support me in life. Tom fulfilled
this but I was never fully happy being with him. I was still deeply in love with
Gatsby. I knew it was better to live with a rich man that I was not fully in
love with, than a poor man who I was head over heels with. When I met Gatsby at
Nick’s cottage and saw how wealthy he was now, I was overjoyed that maybe one
day, I could be with my real love, Gatsby.
