I had left Gatsby once before when he was a poor boy. I had
also kind of left Tom when I met Gatsby the second time at Nick’s cottage. I
went back to Tom after Gatsby’s death because part of me still loves him a
little and he has done so much for me in the past that he was able to help fill
the void of Gatsby after he died. I needed someone to watch out for me and take
care of me. Also, Tom is the father of my daughter and I cannot just leave him
and my daughter. Yes, Tom can sometimes be mean and he has done some bad things
in the past, but so have I. I know that deep down, there is a part in each of
us that cares for each other. We need each other. My love for Gatsby was a love
that cannot be topped. When my love died, I needed someone to catch me and fill
my heart with the love I needed. Tom was this person for me. I stayed with him
because he is and has been my only husband and seems like he would do anything
to make sure nothing happens to me.
